1. RELAXED WAVES

There’s nothing sexy about perfectly flatironed hair—just ask any guy. For soft, touchable waves, work volumizer through damp hair (if your hair is thick, use a nickel-size drop of styling cream instead to reduce frizz). Blow-dry while tossing your hair around with your hands—the bigger it gets, the better. Then take a one-inch curling iron and, holding it vertically, open the iron and spiral inch-wide sections of hair around the barrel for a few seconds without clamping the iron shut. Only curl the hair from ear level down—leaving the roots straight keeps the look loose and natural. Once the waves have cooled, rake your fingers through to soften them.

2. WISPY KNOT

For the most appealing chignon, follow these steps:

1. Starting about two inches from your scalp, lightly tease just your roots with a fine-tooth comb, using broad strokes to avoid compacting the hair too tightly. This will help prevent the bun from slipping out. (Skip this step if your hair is curly.)2. Gather your hair at the nape of your neck and make a low, loose ponytail, securing it with an elastic placed about a half-inch away from your scalp.3. Tease the underside of the ponytail, then casually wind it into a bun. Use ridged, U-shape hairpins to anchor it, sticking one in each side of the knot and one at the bottom.

3. SOFT BLOWOUT

Begin by blow-drying hair straight with a round brush to increase volume, then curl the ends using a large-barrel iron. Working in small sections, roll the bottom few inches of hair under, then slide the iron out and use a large clip to hold curl in place until it has cooled. Afterward, brush through the ends to create chunky coils.

4. SIDE BUN

Shifting a bun to the side makes it more charming—and less schoolmarmish. First, comb hair into a deep side part so it sweeps across one eye. Then, neatly brush it into a low ponytail on the side of your neck opposite to your part, securing the ponytail no more than two inches off-center (any further and you’ll look like you have a doorknob growing out of your ear). Lightly tease the tail with the brush, which will help the bun hold, then wind it around into a chignon and secure with ridged, U-shape hairpins.

5. JUMBO CURLS

The secret to creating them: hot rollers, which give a looser spring to hair than a curling iron. Use medium-size rollers if you have fine hair, and large ones for thick or curly hair. Working with widths of hair that are the size of the rollers, start by wrapping the middle section around the barrel first, then wind the ends around and roll up to your scalp. (This prevents the curls from becoming perky ringlets.) To finish, brush through the curls once to fluff them, then keep your fingers off so they don’t lose their shape.

6. ADD A FLORAL ACCESSORY

When putting flowers in your hair, there’s a fine line between ethereal and hokey. To keep things sophisticated, choose a pin with an orchid or gardenia rather than hippie-ish flowers like daisies. Be sure the buds are white or pastel colors—bright hues are usually too cutesy, though brunettes can pull off a vibrant purple piece. Finally, choose the right placement: On loose hair, pin the flower right above one ear, or stick it in the top of a low bun or ponytail.

7. BIG TEASING

Update the Bardot tease by giving hair a boost with curlers and a blow-dryer. Begin by setting your hair in the hot rollers to add body. Once they’ve cooled, remove the rollers, blast your hair with a blow-dryer to break up the curls, then flip your head upside down and brush through with a paddle brush. When you bring your head up, lightly tease the length of your hair with the brush, then massage your scalp with your fingertips for a sultry look that’s not too over the top.

8. LOOSE BRAID

This is one of the easiest, most casual styles. Make a messy center part, which adds a sexy touch, and gather your hair very loosely at the nape of your neck. Don’t worry if a few shorter pieces around your face fall out—they’ll only enhance the look. First, braid the hair tightly, which helps it hold, then, after securing the ends, gently pull at the sides of the braid to loosen it slightly.

9. LUSH WAVE

It’s the perfect mix of polished and seductive. Blow-dry hair straight, part it in the middle, then use hot rollers to coil small sections under and up toward your scalp. Once the hair has cooled, let it down and use a paddle brush and your palm to coax the curls into one big wave. To finish, rub a tiny drop of shine serum between your hands and skim them over the outer layer of hair, avoiding your roots.

What you’ll need:

• Hot glue
• Sequins
• Clear nail polish
• A barrette

Directions:

1. Brush the top of the barrette with clear nail polish. Let it dry.
2. Lay out the sequins the way you will want them on the barrette. Then add a drop of glue to the back of each sequin.
3. Place the sequins on the barrettes and let the glue dry well.
4. Put a coat of clear nail polish on over the sequins, and let them dry.

• Mix 5 spoons of curd with 2 spoons of methi powder. Apply it on your scalp and leave it for 25 minutes. Rinse it off well later.
• Massaging the scalp with neem oil is also beneficial.

“Emma Roberts’s short, evenly blended layers are angled down so they become seamless,” Maciques says. “It’s the perfect long cut for fine hair, because it gives body and movement without looking straggly.” A side part and jaw-length layers in front help shorten her oval face well, but the cut also flatters just about anyone.

ALLURE TIP: If your hair is fine, don’t go more than two inches below the collarbone, and avoid too many layers so the ends don’t get stringy.

WITH BANGS

Adding bangs helps soften or shorten square, oval, elongated faces, as is the case with Olivia Wilde, who also incorporates long layers that start at her collarbone. Avoid too-blunt bangs; cut into them so they fall softly at your forehead. Your hair can be thick or thin, but unless it’s naturally straight, you’ll become a slave to styling.

The Loose Bun

This bun looks messy and classic at the same time, and can work even if you don`t have time to brush the tangle out of your hair. Flip your head upside down and make a loose ponytail on the top of your head. Make sure the ponytail is not so loose it can fall out, but loose enough to have a bit of movement. Take your hair and loosely twist it, then wrap it around your ponytails holder until you have formed a loose bun. Wrap another hair-tie around the bun making sure it stays hidden. Move the bun around on top of your head to make the rest of your hair even and comfortable. Pull a few wisps down to finish the look. It takes 5 minutes to make a pretty, loose bun.

The Elegant Ponytail

Ponytails can be fashionable if they are done right. If you have a cut with straight bangs, a ponytail swept up high at the top of your crown with your bangs down is a classic look. If you are growing your bangs out, try parting them on the side and bobby pinning them in the back for a more sophisticated ponytail look. The bangs or long hair in front can also be held out and pinned back to make a quiff, or a tuft of hair made by brushing it upward from the forehead.
